Redneck Landscaping

We have saved the landscaping for last in the Broussard Home Renovation Extravaganza. There was absolutely NO landscaping here except for a huge section of very thick ground cover, some weed bushes and two dead small trees. We got the trees and weed bushes out last year to at least clean up the yard to have a blank canvas. D attached the root ball to some straps and pulled them out with his truck. Yes we are THOSE neighbors :) We do everything and anything ourselves that we can to save money since the cost of completely rehabbing a home is crazy expensive if you hire out the work, plus whats not to love about putting your blood sweat and tears into your home:)
Back to the yard...Getting out the ground cover was intimidating because it had been there since before we were born, not to mention it was so thick we figured the roots must be really deep.

Donnie cut it all down several inches with a rented industrial mower, then we obviously hooked it to the truck...duh. I mean that's what everyone does right?! It rolled right out like a giant, heavy dirt carpet. The roots were super shallow. It was bizarre. It took all day but we got it out! It must have weighed tons because of the dirt that was trapped in there...we could not lift it so we dragged it to the street with the truck and the city came and hauled that sucker away.
Then we spent a week or two digging out the shape and filling it with loads of dirt until it was high enough. It was well worth the time and effort because we saved thousands of dollars. Everything is doing well except for some of the shrubs which I did an intervention on today. I love gardening!
